in connecticut, is not something i support. i think this whole issue of assault weapons and weapons that can easily be converted to a salt weapons is a question we really need to have in this country. obviously the discussion can begin about the size of the magazines, and i think that's a good discussion to have. i'd love to hear the people argue that we need 30-round magazines and that's somehow tied to the right to bear arms. [ inaudible question ] right, and they say that because they know they can prevent about -- -- i'm not talking about basic weapons or weapons used in hunting. best of my knowledge, if anyone uses an assault weapon -- an assault weapon in the hunting with the 30-round magazine, i'd be quite surprised by that -- and by the way, if they do, and because of public safety, that should go away, then i believe that should go away. >> public policy didn't see to be particular focus of yours during the first half of your term here -- well, i was wondering if you agree with that observation and if so, why now? >> i think gun safety is -- has been important to our administration

. pete, where are connecticut state police focusing today as they try to uncover more behind the reasons of adam lanza? >> well, there's a huge wide range of what they're doing, thomas. they're interviewing witnesses still. they haven't even gotten to interviewing the children yet. that's going to be a very difficult process to do, very delicate one is the way they described it. there were two adult survivors. they have the history of the weapons, the history of the ammunition, all of that to look at. now, the hopes were fairly high that they might have a breakthrough with adam lanza's computer that was at his mother's home at the scene where he shot his mother before this all began. but there's some pessimism about that now because he damaged the computer, took the hard drive out of the computer, damaged that further. they knew that when they got it. they thought well, you know, maybe we can get something out of it but i'm told the initial attempts to get information have been unsuccessful. they will obviously try to continue to work at that. but they have yet found no answer to the que

of connecticut sandy hook elementary would be filled with the sounds of children and their teachers. however, today, that school remains a crime scene, closed indefinitely just days after 20 small children and six educators were murdered, brutally extinguished in an act of violence that has gripped the hearts and minds of this nation. 26 souls lost and today, the first funerals will be held for two of the youngest victims. 6-year-old jack pinto, a new york giants fan, and noah pozner, whose twin sister survived the shooting. we are also learning new information about the connecticut state police investigation, including that the gunman, adam lanza, had enough ammunition if given more time to shoot hundreds of students in the halls of sandy hook. >> every single facet of the weapons will be analyzed. every single round of ammunition will be looked at and examined for any kind of physical evidence. i alluded yesterday to the volume of rounds, for example, that were seized or recovered. each singular round will be examined. >> president obama last night visited with families who lost loved ones

in connecticut. we talk so much about protecting our children and for some of these family they were already their children although they were still living in russia. is there anything that the u.s. government could do? what would be a response that might evoke a response from russia? >> well, right now the state department is asking the parent of these children to sit tight. they are working on negotiating these 46 cases, making sure at least those children who have already bonded with those parents already in the pipeline waiting to be taken back to the united states could be, if you grandfathered in, if you will, and then they are trying to work with the russians on lifting the entire ban. there is already an adoption agreement between the u.s. and russia that they've been negotiating for about two years. it was just signed in november. this ban that was signed by president putin doesn't repeal that treaty and the u.s. is encouraged by statements by russian lawmakers and other cabinet ministers that say that maybe this ban could be lifted because it's certainly as it has touched here in t
